What to look for in a Personal Trainer: (Health, Wellness and Weight-Management Coach)

1. Patience - The key to good-client-trainer relationship is to understand what works and doesn’t for a client. This requires time to get to know the person. That requires doing an assessment of the body to determine strengths and weaknesses. Then an individualized plan is to be created with specific goals in mind to meet one’s needs. This could be from incorporating exercise into one’s life-style to losing excess weight.

2. Communication - A trainer should be available to respond to questions about movements, nutritional choices and accountability to following the plan or making modifications via email or phone.

3. Professionalism - Clothes need be simple and professional. The trainer needs to be attentive and respectful to the client at all times.

4. Education - Trainers need to have a strong knowledge base about what they are talking about.  Therefore, an appropriate fitness, health & wellness, weight management, or other certification(s) from an accredited organization such as American Council of Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) need to be acquired.

5. Personality - You want to feel comfortable and trust that your trainer has your best interest in mind. The trainer should make the experience a positive one to motivate you to move forward with reaching your goals.

6. Cost, Availability, and Location -  These three things matter. Will the experience be worth the investment; Is the trainer available for sessions on a regular basis; and is the location suitable for you - traditional gym setting, outdoors or in the privacy of one’s home.

7. Programming - An effective trainer is one who keeps track of your progress, so you can see whether your investment is paying off. There should be a base-line or starting point followed by regular benchmarks to show growth over time whether they are strength gains, more energetic, weight loss, or other achievements to keep you on track towards reaching your long-term goal.
